Description: The deployment of TV on Mobile has started some time ago with the availability of high performance 3G networks and mobile phones. In order to allow  a more efficient  transmission to a large amount of users the DVB Project [2] has specified the DVB-H standard that defines a broadcast channel with high data rates. Based on DVB-H or other IP-based broadcast channels DVB IP Datacast[4] specifies transmission protocols, data formats and allows the optional usage of a return channel over unicast networks like UMTS or GSM. Worldwide, particularly in many European countries, the first generation of TV services based on DVB-H has been tested and evaluated and the commercial rollout is starting. In addition to the network technology (DVB-H) and the transmission protocols as well as the data formats (IP Datacast), the DVB Project has not yet defined an enabling technology for interactive services. Therefore one objective of the EU-funded research project MOBISERVE[1] is to do research in the field of convergent interactive services  As the second goal of the project is to promote European technologies in China, MOBISERVE has defined interactive service scenarios for the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing. In result an appropriate system architecture has been specified and will be implemented. During the Olympic Games in Beijing a user trial with the whole system will be carried out. This paper presents the MOBISERVE architecture and the results of the technological research on the client side.

Description: This paper introduces a software platform for DVB-H and IP Datacast that combines Java technology with XML-based description languages and is part of the architecture developed within the MOBISERVE project. First of all it explains the motivation for combining both technologies. Secondly, it shows the architecture and the interlinking between XML and Java.  An example service (ZooGuide) is demonstrated in order to show the platform capabilities and the advantages of this approach. The service is realized on a DVB-H consumer terminal. Finally, the implementation is evaluated and possible enhancements of the platform are shown as an indication for future work.
