Student at the faculty for electrical engineering of Technische Universität Braunschweig (Braunschweig Technical University, Germany).

1978 - 1982

Researcher and principal engineer at "Institut für Nachrichtentechnik" (Institute for Communications Technology) of Braunschweig, Technical University.

1982 - 1989

Employed by "Robert Bosch GmbH - Geschäftsbereich Fernsehanlagen" (business division television equipment) at Darmstadt, Germany.

1989 - 1993

Director of Engineering at "Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR)" (the public broadcaster in the four northern states of Germany) at Hamburg, Germany.

April 1993 until today

Professor at the Technical University at Braunschweig, Germany and Managing Director of "Institut für Nachrichtentechnik (IfN)" (see above).

June 1995

Award of the "Montreux Achievement Gold Medal" for the contributions to the development of digital television (Digital Video Broadcasting -DVB).

April 1998

Nomination as "Ordentliches Mitglied" (full member) of the "Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft" (scientific society of Braunschweig).

  • Member of the board of "Deutsche TV-Plattform" (German TV platform), the national body coordinating all aspects of TV technology and its introduction in Germany from 1992 to 2012.
  • Chairman of the "Technical Module" of the "DVB Project" from 1992 to 2012.
  • Member of the "Kommission zur Ermittlung des Finanzbedarfs der Rundfunkanstalten (KEF)" (the independent German commission responsible for the allocation of licence fees to the public broadcasting organisations) since June 1994, chairman of working group number 4 since January 2012
  • Vice President of the Technical University Braunschweig for "Strategic Development and Technology Transfer" from 1st October 2012.
