In digital communications, any residual correlation in the quantized and transmitted symbols can be utilized to improve decoder performance. The signal quality can be improved even for error-free transmission conditions, both for scalar and vector quantization, both for single-symbol as well as for packet-switched transmission. The improved decoding approach can be either based on a receiver-sided prediction error PDF or a feedforward neural network both being employed only in the receiver. Our improved decoding scheme can be used in any media transmission application, in a system-compatible fashion, and is especially useful for correlated media data and low bit rates. [More]
